The New Yorker纽约客是我最喜爱的英文杂志（没有之一）。在纽约客那么多固定栏目里，我最喜欢的竟是占不到一页纸的Briefly Noted极简书评。每一期的新杂志到了我都会先翻开这一栏 ，看看推荐的书有没有我感兴趣的，如果有对眼缘的，我就会在亚马逊上下单。
不仅仅是跟着这个栏目挑书，我也在观察学习纽约客的编辑们如何可以用150-200字就可以写出让读者的大脑判断出有兴趣与否的极简书评。
这一期我一眼看中的是Things I have Withheld这本书，在美亚下单时看到果然是5/5满分好评。且看看Briefly Noted是怎么用150字”勾住”目标读者的：
In fourteen dynamic essays（14篇富有生命力的短文：吸引了我这种爱读短文章、喜欢可以随时拿起、随时放下的读者，形容词只要一个“dynamic”，就已足够丰富）, encompassing memoir, reportage, and open letters, the author, who is Jamaican, examines personal and professional moments in which silence revealed a truth about race and oppression （给出作者的背景，以呼应书的主题：race and oppression）. Miller parse stories “overheard when the aunts thought you were not listening, “（暗示书里的是娓娓道来的故事，不是大篇大篇的说教）， white colleagues’ assumptions about his homeland, a painful debate with friends about the friction between #Mxtoo and racist carceral justice, his grandmother’s revelations of an explosive family secret（几句话就明明白白地说出了这本书的基调，是作为一个minority都会遇到、都能relate的情境）. Miller admits to apprehension about voicing his private judgement but explains that “each of these essays is an act of faith, an attempt to put my trust in words again.”（虽然有个人的立场，但是会是真诚的解读）
150字的极简书评，把书的主旨、作者背景、故事风格基调、与暗示目标读者会有感同身受的读感四点说得清清楚楚。
“简”、”要“真是一种令人羡慕的能力。就跟纽约客从现在起开始练习用150字说清楚所有事情、立场、感受的能力吧。
